Advantages of using Zigbee and how it helps promote IoT (Internet of Things)

ZigBee is a low-cost, low-power, wireless mesh networking standard based on
IEEE 802.15.4-2011 standard. The low cost allows the technology to be widely
deployed in wireless control and monitoring applications, such as wireless light
switches with lamps, electrical meters with in-home-displays, consumer electronics
equipment via short-range radio. Second, the low power-usage allows
longer life with smaller batteries. Third, the mesh networking provides high reliability and more extensive range that theoretically up to 65000 nodes. Also,
Zigbee comes with AES-128 encryption for data security. ZigBee has three work
frequency bands: 2.402 2.480GHz, 868 868.6MHz, 902 928MHz, altogether
27 channels.
In early days, there are different Zigbee command protocols for different products
by different participants. From Zigbee 3.0, it defines more than 130 devices
and the widest range of device types including home automation, lighting, energy
management, smart appliance, security sensors, and health care monitoring
products that is ready for interoperable IoT application. Also, it supports
both easy-to-use DIY installations as well as professionally installed systems.
The Zigbee 3.0 Certification Program has replaced Zigbee Home Automation
(ZHA) and Zigbee Light Link (ZLL) Certification Programs from 2017. The Zigbee
3.0 certification program is now the main certification path for all new zigbee
products intended for the home automation and lighting market.
Zigbee has become the technology of choice for bringing the benefits of the
Internet of Things (IoT) into the Smart Home, providing the ability to deliver an
integrated ecosystem of home monitoring, energy management, heating and
cooling, security and convenience devices.
To certify Zigbee compliance product, it needs join as a Zigbee Alliance member
and select a complaint product platform. The product will be tested by a Zigbee
Alliance authorized testing house by using Zigbee test tool (ZTT). After the
product is certified and approved, Zigbee Alliance will issue a formal certificate
and product can carry a Zigbee logo.
